FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - More people are turning to bicycles for transportation these days, and the city of Fort Wayne is working to make itself more bike friendly.

More than 100 new bike racks are being installed in the downtown area, and federal stimulus dollars are being used to pay for new bike lanes in different locales.

The bike racks might seem like a small upgrade, but they are appreciated by those who travel on two wheels.

City Planner Paul Spoelhof says, "We will be producing a bike network which will be a grid network of streets that will be recommended connections throughout the city for cyclists."

Cycling Enthusiast Dave Lehman says, “That's a great improvement, because when I ride my bike downtown, you usually end up chaining to a tree or a signpost somewhere, and it's going to be great having something that's there for the bicycles."

A draft of a new Fort Wayne bike plan should be finished by the end of the year, including a bikeway network connecting neighborhoods to desired destinations across the community.
