For many years, the 3RVS Century Tour has happened on Labor Day weekend. Phil Snider put on a great event that featured a looped course out of Cecil, Ohio. Late last year, club officer Tim Claypool brought a proposal to the club’s monthly meeting agenda.
For several years, Community Memorial Hospital of Hicksville, Ohio has put on a cycling event to promote a healthier lifestyle. Looking to partner with local cycling groups, event organizers came in contact Tim. Ideas were put forth and Tim had a thought, “combine the hospital’s event with our Century Tour.” Phil had been looking for someone to take over the duties of the century ride and Tim’s idea seemed to fit.
Fast forward to the present, Memorial Hospital has agreed to organize our Century Tour and fold it into their funding raising event. They will take care of all the logistics, registration, SAG and meals, as well as keep the course we have used - a loop century from Cecil. There will be a mass start plus the added bonus of a meal at the end of the ride. The date is Saturday, August 27th with a registration opening at 7am and mass start at 8am in Hicksville, Ohio. Pre-registration by August 13th will cost $20. Thereafter, the cost will $25. Online information: www.cmhosp.com . The tour begins and ends at Community Memorial Hospital administration entrance, just north of Ohio State Road 2 (High Street). Directions can be found on the website, the address is 208 N. Columbus St. with a contact phone #419-5422-580.
Another 3RVS August event is Bike at Night - part deux. The second of three Bike at Night rides will again start at West Swinney Park, 9pm, Saturday, August 20th. The out and back route will take riders to New Haven using the river greenway. The halfway stopping point will have treats for participants. Helmets and lights are required. The July ride was a great success of leisurely riding and camaraderie. It was quite a spectacle seeing a long line of cyclists blinking and flashing as the sun faded to night. I would caution those who want to attend the August ride, the Maumee path can be very dark at night and a fairly bright head-lamp is good to have.
Lastly, the weekend tours will again start at 9am. Hot and humid is still the norm in August. A good application of sunscreen and added fluids is wise to the cyclist in the know. We will have rides that start in all four quadrants of the city: Carroll H.S.; Kreager Park; Jefferson M.S.; Homestead H.S.; Wayne H.S. are just a few. Many weekend tours will have a variety of pace groups. To view the schedule: http://www.3rvs.com/ride-schedules/weekend-touring
August is a full schedule of 3RVS weekday and weekend riding. We ride in the morning, we ride in the evening and we now ride at night. If you cannot partake in an August club ride, you are not riding a bike. Oh and one last thing, the City Tour is Friday, August 5th and 6:30 pm at the greenway trail-head parking lot east of the Skateboard Park next to Lawton Park. Amy and Jennifer lead a friendly hour long pace around town that usually ends with consumption at a downtown eatery.
